PS machine coordination

Definition

  • The Machine Coordinator (MC) provides an expert service to the team on shift for one or more accelerators/facilities in the CERN accelerator complex. The MC ensures the predefined schedule is respected and coordinates the foreseen and unforeseen activities with the team on shift for the accelerator/facility concerned. The MC is part of a best effort service team outside working hours and may be requested to come in to support the operations team on shift in dealing with problems and/or deciding on priorities.

Scope

  • Provides a best effort service outside normal working hours during their coordination week

Mandate

  • Ensure that the physics and machine development schedules are respected and determine the daily priorities together with the team on shift
  • Follow up of day-to-day operation and problems.
  • Ensure with the Operators/Engineers in Charge on shift the follow-up of longer-term problems in close collaboration with members of the different service and equipment groups and initiate together with the Operators/Engineers in Charge on shift interventions in the machine and/or on the equipment when necessary
  • Participate where possible in the Machine Development sessions, in particular those related to the domain linked to the group the MC belongs to.
  • Participate in the training of the Operators/Engineers in Charge and involve them in measurements/Machine Development sessions.
  • Perform an Accelerator Fault Tracking review and attend the dedicated meeting prior to the Facilities Operation Meeting (FOM) / LHC Beam Operations Committee (LBOC) and clarify issues related to the injector accelerator fault tracking.
  • Propose improvements to machine operation and associated equipment, controls, and systems, that could lead to better machine performance and more efficient machine exploitation, in particular improvements related to the domain of expertise of the MC.
